I'm actually doing this trip as a round trip to Taipei, but with a week's stopover in Osaka. As I'm booking PDX-SFO-KIX/ITM-TSA-HND-LAX-PDX, it only costs me $26 more to add in a flight from Osaka to Taipei. Also, I'm trying to do all I can to avoid TPE and fly into the much closer TSA instead.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Another piece of advice about KIX domestic gate area (and Japanese domestic terminals in general). There aren't any facilities occupy your time once you pass security to the domestic gates. When I passed through a few weeks ago, I was happy to sit in the pretty amazing space and read a book for an hour. However, you should stay landside until 20-30 minutes before your flight if you're one of those travelers whose understimulated brains need a constant parade of baubles and gewgaws to distract them from the inherent misery of life, the universe and everything. In the landside retail area immediately before security, you'll find restaurants and souvenir shops and whatnot.
