Point 2 was mostly related to architecture & decor.
Regarding king-bedded rooms when you are two guys, the best properties just guess and don't ask anything. May be it's easier for them (more obvious? more frequent?) now that I am 34 and Pierre 39, but when we were younger this kind of question was just embarrassing.
The first time we came to the Oriental Bangkok, we were offered a huge upgrade just because the guy thought that our reservation was wrong and he looked for something available with twin beds. We declined as we still wanted a king bed (now I think it was a mistake!
).
