Then that wasn't a luxury hotel -- unless of course by "old and beaten up room" you mean antique furnishings and 500 year old museum grade frescoes painted on the walls (as happens at a few hotels in Europe, for example in Venice). Mistaking centuries old patina on fine furnishings for dirt and neglect has been known to happen by tourists who picked the wrong hotel to stay in.
A luxury hotel has impeccable furnishings inside the room and in the main public spaces. The building and it's fabric might be old and obsolete, the floors may creak and groan, but the sheets will be Frette.
