A fair point and I agree. I think the issue is that maybe we should enhance the requirements for this sort of thing.
I seem to recall a number of postings on the AA forum about needing affidavits to take kids out of the country with only one parent present (the procedure is here:

Circumvented by dual citizenship... but that seems to be a procedure problem. The US should have special procedures to handle these sorts of cases (I repeat that I agree that the airline is not at fault if it followed US laws).
