I agree that security checks at TLV can feel 'different' as compared to most airport, but to me they also feel far more sensible, and unlike the body scans now installed in many European and American airports, they actually make sense/serve a purpose and participate in a squeaky clean security record that seems almost unbelievable considering the unequalled level of threat.

The unsettling part is that you are asked many questions, quite fast, sometimes repeating each other, and by people who often don't bother to pretend to smile. It can feel odd to feel that you are being 'questioned' insistently while you know yourself that you are no terrorist, but if you remember that everyone goes through the same (more or less depending on whether you are a first time or a regular visitor), I don't personally find it aggravating at all. You can choose to take offence, show frustration, and transform this into a really painful exercise, or you can choose to just stay calm, answer questions which may seem random or pointless (but usually aren't) and comply, and as others have pointed out, this usually makes things fairly smooth. Queues can feel long when you first arrive, but things usually move quite fast and the several stages sort of break the boredom.

And yes, it is true that most regular visitors do get an 'easier' later stage search than most first time visitors (regardless of whether they are Jewish or not) simply because unlike most European countries which claim to be 'random' in security screenings, Israelis believe in profiling and thus that if this is your 20th bombless trip to their country, you are less likely to be a menace than average. Not unreasonable in my view.

Most importantly, you'll have a great weekend in a wonderful and very exciting city!
