I don't think anyone here has said that or believed his to be the case.

WHat we are saying is many hotels have had bad things happen, thus they roll out the security deposit to all or to those customers who fit the "profile' of possible trouble such as a cash paying customer or a customer with no credit card on file.

I've stayed at residence inn's where they post signs saying cash paying customers (which to the hotel means anyone not presenting a credit card at arrival" must post a deposit. Some even state the deposit will be MAILED back to you post departure. I always use a credit card on arrival, and have never had to leave a deposit, just the standard pre-authorization for my stay charges plus some amount per day for incidentals.
