I traveled once without my elite card. Was connecting in FRA and had enough time to exit through passport control and went to Air Canada check in counters. I gave them my aeroplan number and explained that I don't have my card with me. They checked ( I assume) something on the computer and printed out a pass for the LH lounge.
Went to the lounge and had no problem getting in.
