Don't count on it. I genuinely needed a second UK passport to travel as my original one away getting a visa. A letter from my employer, a major oil company (not the one based in the Hague though !) justifying my need, failed to impress. Nevertheless the London passport office is a dream, very efficient, polite, and helpful, unlike the ones I get foreign visas from.
