I'd have no problems with booking a flight arriving at LHR at 2220 - I'm assuming you'll have hand luggage only, so won't be hanging around in the airport for long. You can find the last train times at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloa...piccadilly.pdf and there's a good bit of leeway before the last tube to Central London.

Others may have more experience of the tube frequencies at that time of night, but I wouldn't have considered one terminal to be better than the other.

Having noticed you're CO Gold, you'll also be able to collapse in a comfy chair and have a glass of wine in the BD lounge in EDI, which you'll probably need after all that rushing around...
