I'm building an itinerary that includes a stop in DPS.
I'm holding space on CX (a 777), 22-hour layover in HKG, then QF (744) to MEL.
There's also space on SQ in J (SQ247 to SQ237) -- a 772 and a 773.
I've never flown SQ and would love to give it a try -- but are these older planes? Is the 7-hour SIN-MEL a newer configuration? Better to fly that than the CX/QF option?

Depends on how much time you have. SQ seems faster than CX/QF. IMO both CX and SQ will most likely have the old regional seating on these planes.
You could always try to look at if they have 77W, 77R, or A388 to MEL. That's your best bet in getting to know SQ in its new'-er' cabin. Be careful though 77R has the new regional J instead of Int'l J.
