I ended up with the same card and was able to SMS just fine with it. The package has use you a dialing prefix for cheap overseas calls, but I think that interferes with SMS; just use a direct number (e.g. +1 xxx xxx xxxx for the US). I don't know if I could recharge it, or how much time I have left, because the recharge number didn't have an English option. I couldn't understand what it was saying.
I wouldn't recommend that arrivals shop, though, because in my tired, dazed, post-arrival state, they steered me into an overpriced ($250 or $300, can't remember) SIM package. There are surely better deals out there.
