I don't think there was any science behind it at all. Last year, I was renewed automatically at Silver despite only having 300-and something points and only one previous year at Silver. A colleague who'd had silver for 5 years and was 20 points short had to plead with BAEC to renew him. In the end they extended his membership year by a few more weeks so that he could take an extra flight to get the 20 missing points.
