It is a lot but remember that they're probably charging in a base of Pounds and not Dollars. Many airlines charge $30 or so for seat assignment, so it's likely that BA is charging about 45 pounds.
Except that 1 GBP = 1.55 CAD. Either way, even at 45 GBP that's pretty steep.
