The difference between Change Itinerary and Cancel-then-rebook is that the latter costs you your $10 EBCI fee.
You can change a flight that you've booked with points, but on the screen where you select the new flights if you select the same flight I don't think it actually changes anything. I believe in this case you must cancel and then rebook.
Are you sure you lose the EBCI? I never buy that (don't need it) but I would think if you cancel a flight any EBCI funds would end up as reusable travel funds.
