I was listening to the radio on the way to and from lunch today, and I heard two Virgin ads with the theme Airspace is now workspace. Free Wifi and IFE on Virgin from DFW to SFO and LAX. Hopefully this competition is just getting started...

I think AA wants to eliminate huge crowds of people trying to earn miles on the promo, but never have reason to fly this route otherwise. Perhaps they are learning from the overcrowding they had on previous DEQM routes during promos - the flights were extremely full and therefore less pleasant, IME

How many of the open jaw travel plans you mention could successfully booked through Virgin? I'm under the impression Virgin's network doesn't cover that situation well. And to exclude the open jaw scenario, you really need to exclude one-ways.
