As to the Powell & Hyde cable car, be prepared to wait in line for it if you pick it up at either one of the ends so if possible walk a few blocks and try and pick it up at a street stop.

If you do go to Fisherman's Wharf, and choose to walk over to Ghirardelli Square, walk over to the Buena Vista Cafe and have an Irish Coffee (or two ) as it will not only warm you up but it is an institution.
