We did ship an iMac 24" back from Houston a few years back. We shipped it via my dad's work, with very discounted rates, so it was definately worth it. Unfortunately I don't have that option this time...
Yes of course, otherwise I wouldn't have slept for three days! From the UK it's actually some companies negotiating great deals with courier companies and then selling the transport back to you, a bit like a broker system, so it was a shipment handled by DHL picked up from flat in the UK, delivered at flat in France. Very smooth and well worth it. I moved several suitcases that way. Very sadly, the same system doesn't seem to exist the other way round (France to UK) so it will cost me a fortune when I need to move things back!!

Yep, F70 is a complete no goer there, and with all the other problems I mentioned earlier, I agree with you the hand luggage option is probably not going to be worth looking into. BTW, unfortunately buying an extra seat would not have enabled you to bring over-sized hand luggage anyway (and obviously would be very expensive in this case as you said). So ultimately, if insurance and courrier do not work for you, you may well decide this is not worth the hassle...
