Was told no...
I sent an email to AA and asked if LAX-DFW-LAX was a qualifying trip for this promo and got this response....

I apologize for any confusion. My understanding is of the DEQSL
promotion is that your travel must originate in Texas.

Did I get fed wrong info?

UPDATE: I called AA Customer Service and was now told that it can originate in CA. Sorry for the confusion, I hope AA becomes less confused too.
