My new bride and I recently flew to Hawaii for our honeymoon, we were in First using miles + copay, and upgrades were cleared at time of booking. The first leg of the flight was on American Eagle, and we were charged $220 to check 5 bags between us. I showed her our boarding passes for ORD-HNL and HNL-OGG that showed First Class, she said it didn't come up in her computer.
We were up against cut-off, so I told her we'd pay the fee and email to sort it all out. Before I do, I wanted to check with the experts here and make sure that I am not mistaken, and that we are in fact entitled to 3 free bags per. The thing giving me pause is that first leg being AE, which doesn't have first class, at least not on flights ABE-ORD.

You should not have been charged for the bags. They tried this with me when I did DTW-ORD-HNL-KOA over x-mas. The DTW-ORD was on AE with no first class so it still showed my economy booking code. Just nicely tell AA that you paid $700 and 60k miles roundtrip for two "First Class" upgrades and therefore are eligible for the free checked luggage (not sure what the maximum is as I rarely check more than 1). Its not your problem they didn't offer first class from your origin.
