I actually had the same issue lately, both on LX and LH I have been assigned middle seats frequently. I change them when I check-in online. (I don't have the time/willingness to call them twice a week just to book seats)
What I did realize is that when booked directly thru either LH or LX website I nearly always have a free seat next to me. When booked thru a travel agent I end up in the middle.
