But be careful if someone calls you at 2 in the morning asking if you would not mind changing to a different flight.

Airlines have been known to get someone to quietly make the change and then the airline solves an overbooking problem without having to pay anybody.

I would even be leery of accepting some bump compensation over the phone because it could become a he said she said argument later as to whether that part was agreed upon.
