You can but you don't need to IF you decide to fly AC from YVR-SYD. Aeroplan allows one way awards on AC planes only. So what you need to do is to book the one way trip from YVR to SYD when it opens up, and then call in and change it to a return award when the return flights open up.

You WILL be charged a lot more than half the points to book the initial one way flight BUT they will credit you the points when you book the return so you only end up paying the points for a return trip (i.e. you DON'T pay for two one-way awards). Though you will need to pay the change fee and the Aeroplan telephone booking fees.

And you DON'T need to fly AC on the return trip. Trust me - I booked two business class seats to SYD for Christmas and New Years using this strategy so I know it works.
