I'm pretty sure a close-range shot with a .22 would buy you enough time to get away from an assailant in most circumstances.

.22 are quite lethal close range, the bullets are low velocity so they just bounce around in you rather than go straight through. By the way, there are key fob's that fire .25 caliber rounds.
