That what I thought also. At one time some properties would have your room type as non-smoking guaranteed but all the current reservatoins I have say in the email something to the effect that my preference have been forwarded to the hotel but are based on availability.
I feel that smoking preference should be guaranteed at the time of the booking.
You are talking about different stories. The preferences are the room preferences stored in you profile. However, you book a specific toom type (and king is often enough more expensive than queen or doubles). Otherwise room types like "run of the house" or "Hiltin guest room", which leave a lot of discretion on the hotel's end, would make no sense.
