I would send an email to customer service and be very clear in what you are requesting in terms of compensation. If it is fair I think they will award you some compensation.
I routinely book ~30 minute connections in CLT knowing problems can happen but that is a risk that you always take unfortunately.
Actually, I'm a little surprised they didn't hold it anyway. There were four of us on that BOS-MEM run who all missed our flight. The outbound plane was a CRJ, so even if it was full, 4pax represented a measurable percentage of the total passengers.
(I was in 3D on the BOS-MEM leg, one of the other BOS-MEM passengers was in 1D. Neither of us made it and, given the head start we had on everyone else, I can't fathom anyone else did, either.)
