The issue is they IMMEDIATELY assign standby passengers to blocked seats when they start working the flight.
I think standby is loose term as it may refer to pax who are confirmed on the flight but don't have a seat assigned.
Edit to add I find it easier to seat familes when they are on the unseated listed aka seat request card. That way I know who you are before you even talk to me.
