If the miles come from an Elite member's account, there is no fee, regardless of who is upgraded.
For years (when non-elites had no option to upgrade low fare classes), my friend would transfer his amex points to my OP account, so i could upgrade him from my account.
bloody awesome. thanks! i couldn't find out the rules on sponsoring and called the elite line to find out whether or not i could sponsor non-elite PAX for mileage UGs, but didn't ask about the co-pays.
should the same work for UA?
