Actually, the biggest threat to the 748 is high fuel prices. It cannot compete on an efficeincy basis with more modern planes such as the 787.
Except the downturn pushes travelers toward hub-hub flights as long hub-point routes are drawn down. The 748 has lower CASM than the 788, you just have to fill it.
That said, I doubt they'll buy any VLA.
