They were doing this with everyone on my flight including those without status. If there was a flight and they could confirm a seat you were going home that night, if not food and hotel vouchers were given out. These holes in WN aircraft seem to be an annual occurrence.
It has been a number of years but around late 2000 or probably in 2001 I use to fly between PHX and BWI somewhat frequently (twice a month) and at that time flew whatever was cheapest. Sometimes US Airways (prior to their merger with American West) through PIT, once in a while on United or even AA but mostly on Southwest. I recall a couple of problems and thought for sure Southwest had an issue and they gave me some paperwork (voucher I guess) and paid for a ticket on another airline.

Maybe I'm wrong but I'm fairly sure they would do this at times (back then anyhow).
