I agree, nothing was expanded - the court was asked to clarify the search processing. What was upheld was that while the person was stopped at the border, it was legal to process the possessions away from the border.
It is actually an interesting question. On one hand the search can commence only when crossing the border (i.e. can not happen once in the country past border controls). But the practical question is a technology question - should the CBP be required to have analysis tools at every check point. The court said no - but they have to collect everything at the border.
What I would like to know is whether the laptop drive was copied with the copy searched or whether the actual laptop was sent off.
