I am actually quite fond of AKL. Nice little airport after the remodel even with no status. Then again, I even like CGK.
Separate Domestic and International Terminal makes connecting harder.
This is why I really like MEL: Just walk outside Quarantine, recheck and clear security. For me the best Airport to connect Dom/Int.
Both in SYD and in AKL there is no airport hotel in walking distance of the terminal (like in MEL, MUC, FRA,...).
