Gold - what is the point?

Forgive me if this has been covered, but I did a quick search and didn't find much.

I recieved SPG gold status last year as part of the promotion with Delta. I assume that it is the same as earning gold.

While I like SPG properties, I rarely get to stay in one because of where my travel takes me.

I am, however, sayting at the Sharaton in Madison, WI next week. When I called today to inquire about a room upgrade they told me the only way was to pay the difference. I asked- because I really don't know- what gold was supposed to get me, and she said "it's the same as prefered but upgrades cost less".

Is this true?
I am also gold with Marriott and was considereing switching to SPG when ever I could. But if this is the case, then it is hardly worth it. I almost always get a suite in any courtyard. I get club level at any Marriott, etc.

I have also booked all the hotels for my honeymoon in Sydney at SPG hotels (Westin and W). Do I have a chance of an upgrade or anything special at either of these?

Thanks
-N
