The girlfriend and I managed an (unintentional) bump run last weekend, and now we have a couple thousand in flight vouchers to use up.

We decided to fulfill her dream of visiting Bali. Flying out in early September, and we had planned on about 14-17 days of total time over there.

I personally thought that two weeks in Bali alone was a bit much and suggested doing a small side trip somewhere, which the girlfriend was perfectly fine with. So we're looking for an interesting 3-4 day side trip in that general area of the world.

We are both in our early 30s. She's a beach bum and enjoys seeing the local culture. I do too, and also enjoy wildlife photography to boot. Ideally we're looking for a place with a nice beach with some possible daytrips for animal spotting. Neither of us are into clubbing, sports or diving.

With all that in mind, are there any places you would recommend within a 1-2 hour flight of Bali? I was pondering Kota Kinabalu, but would like more input from people who have been there.

(Also, am I going to be shunned for suggesting two weeks in Bali is a bit much?)
