Thanks for the other suggestions on this thread - they're very helpful, and I suspect that we'll end up doing one of them.
According to ANA, on Sep 1 you can get a *A one way award (saver miles) on AC via either Ottawa or Toronto. Both have space in Y for award travel.
If UA is blocking in, transfer the miles to CO, and get the seats that way!
