One way international ticket - travel agent?

Later this year I'll be relocating to England from the US. Logic suggests that the best way to do this would be to buy a one-way ticket (and this will probably make it easier for me to get reimbursed by my company). However, on .bomb a one-way at the time of year that I need is 50% more than a return.

Is there any possibility that a travel agent could be able to do better than me at booking a one-way? I haven't been to one in over a decade, so I have no idea if they have more options than us.

Alternatively, does anyone have any other suggestions? There are no saver awards at that time, and I'm loathe to burn that many miles on it. I'm keen to fly UA, as I'll be a 1P again by then, and the extra baggage allowance will be helpful.

The only other options I've thought of are: booking a return and dropping the return leg (presumably will lose all the miles from the first leg, at least), and booking a return and then a separate US-UK flight on miles, thus getting a cheap return flight the other way (maybe the best option?).
