I guess Business Traveler reporters weren't able to steal the real JQ top secret plan for the 787, which is the "Low Altitude Passenger Embarkation System". LAPES will allow JQ to have ultra quick turnaround at airports, by avoiding landing to drop off and pick up passengers. Instead they'll be LAPES'ed in and out of the plane, using what looks like a cargo net to the untrained eye, but is actually a fly-by-wire system -- a first for Boeing. True to Boeing tradition, it doesn't fly the plane (the pilots still do that), but it does allow pax to fly in loose formation with the airplane, doing their own takeoffs and landings while the plane does a low altitude flyby of the terminal. JQ is still working on how to refuel the planes, but JQ spokesman "Bruce" was quoted as saying "we're hoping the 787 will be so fuel efficient that we only have to fill the tank once a month". QF is staying mum about how their 787s will be configured compared to JQ, except to say that all fabrics will match the colours and textures of Neil Perry cuisine in order to eliminate the cost of cleaning aircraft.
