Depends on the carrier. On AA for instance they have a max size for the second item. I doubt a Tristar would officially make it. That said, I took a B&R BRX19 and a Tristar on a trip earlier this year on AA. I normally dont carry that much but there were some odd circumstances and it was a long (for me) trip. Normally a small roller and a briefcase is plenty for a trip.
