Just be grateful you weren't travelling on some of the older UK rolling stock that requires you to pull down the window, lean out and open the door by hand. Even amongst the British there are countless opportunities for misunderstandings and missed stops by irregular travellers who are expecting to have a button to press.
This brings back some ridiculous memories of living in the UK. Yes, having to push the window down and open the door handle from the outside -- surely an award winning design there! Not to mention keeping thousands of extra station staff employed manually closing doors before trains leave...
