Know I'm probably beating a dead horse here - but in 300K BIS miles over the past 5 years, I don't think I've ever seen a UA C/F cabin 80% empty inside 24 hours and still been waiting on an upgrade. Maybe not even 50% empty.

The ONLY rationale for doing so is to try and squeeze as many more $ out of pax as possible before running complimentary upgrades. If that's the new M.O. going forward, you're going to have a lot of PO'd elites. It may make them add'l $ in the short term, but would be shooting themselves in the foot long-term.

If PS was run like this, you'd have 22-24 of the 26 C seats getting assigned day-of (or at the gate) - that definitely wouldn't fly with PS flyers
