You really are trying to ask more questions to make it confusing aren't you?

Inside 24 hours, from what I know, EUA runs dynamically. Which means that when someone checks in for the flight, EUA is triggered to run. If there is no R available, then no one gets upgraded. In your case where you saw R available, the next person to check in would trigger EUA to run and since R space is available, those people would be upgraded. As for your question about expiring mileage upgrades, they used to never be included in EUA runs during T-24. However, I remember
UA Insider mentioning that they were working on a fix to include so that when a mileage upgrade waitlist expires, those passengers are still included in the EUA runs that occur from T-24 to departure.
