Do you really have that much choice of schedules between London and the West Coast? I flew that route a lot, both as a passenger and worked it as a Flight Attendant. With a few hours' give, most follow a set pattern. Over to Europe is usually overnight (always?)
Virgin offers two flights a day to Los Angeles and two flights going the other way (US to UK) I can't comment on BA as i haven't flown with them to LAX but i'd imagine its much the same, but yes the leg to Europe always goes overnight (i've yet to see otherwise)
