Dumb question but what's the purpose of "pre-boarding" you to another room? Was that just to make it easier to wait with the baby? Odd that they would do that and then not lead you on board early (as "pre-boarding" implies).
I was surprised as well, but then I remembered a similar experience before - I believe while flying with Easyjet out of Gatwick. There is a call to the gate, your ID and boarding pass are checked as if to board the aircraft but then you only step into a waiting room. Then comes the actual call to the plane, some time later and in no specific order (or something like that - that was a few years ago !)
