Nomenclature: There is no "Immigration" when entering the USA...
Just so you know, the officers who perform primary inspection functions at airport ports of entry are not Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Rather, they are Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. There is no "Immigration" as part of Federal Inspection Services. Instead, FIS is three different inspections, as follows:
- Passport Control
- Customs
- Agriculture
Depending on the size of the FIS facility and location, the three above inspections might be conducted by multiple officers, or just one. Typically, at major airports, you encounter two officers, the first ("primary") CBP officer conducts Passport Control; the second CBP officer conducts Customs and Agriculture inspections. All officers theoretically have been cross-trained to perform all inspection functions.
