Donating miles is a rather inefficient use of miles/taxation rules. One is better off using the miles for gift cards at places one frequents and donate cash to the charity. The charity comes out ahead (i.e. gets cash instead of miles) and the donor comes out ahead (gets a tax deduction for the cash donated)
