Mrs. controller1 and I just completed a three-night stay checking out on Sunday Mar 27.
Arrived at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday Mar 24. Doorman unloaded our luggage from the taxi and opened the door for us. Gold/Platinum line (actually a separate desk) was not manned. However, there was no line at the front desk. Very pleased that we were able to get a room at 1:30 p.m. Had reserved a Jr. Suite with River View and Balcony. Received the same.
I had indicated on my reservation in the comments area that we would be celebrating Mrs. controller1's birthday. Front desk agent asked why we were in town (probably thought we were there for the NCAA Men's Regionals). Told her the occasion and she wished Mrs. controller1 a happy birthday. Nothing else was done for this event during our stay. I didn't expect anything but by placing it on the reservation I gave the property an opportunity to exceed my expectations.
Room was located on the 6th floor, spacious, and extremely clean. Room came with two bathrobes. Toiletries included the traditional Westin White Tea. Shower had a bar of soap, bath gel, shampoo, and conditioner. Separate tub had bath gel, shampoo, and conditioner. Vanity area had a bar of soap and body lotion. Plenty of lighting in the bath area.
Nice HD flat panel TV. No HD channels. In fact the only digital channels were the hotel's promo channels. Probably 50 channels to choose from but analog channels on a HD TV look grainy and all 50 did.
We called each day and arranged for housekeeping to come after a specific time. Each time we returned, the room had been made up spotlessly.
Balcony overlooked the San Antonio River Walk. All of the balconies were unfurnished. If there had been furniture it would have been a constant effort to keep clean from the birds that frequent the river. Also, I can imagine that any balcony furniture would be under-utilized during the 100-degree days of summer in San Antonio. The other side of the river behind the Westin is comprised of a couple of office buildings. Therefore, this area of the river is pretty quiet without the noise that is associated with the restaurant areas of the River Walk.
Ate dinner one night at Zocca (the Westin's Italian restaurant). Excellent meals and very good service. Service the two times we hit the bar was also good.
Participated in the weekly Friday Happy Hour in the lobby. Live entertainment and special prices on drinks. It was very nice.
Had room service our last night after returning around 10:45 p.m. from the theatre. Mrs. controller1 and I happened to order the exact same menu items. Unfortunately, the kitchen did not notice there was an order for "2" of everything. It had been ordered on the ticket correctly. Well, our first part of the order was delivered around 11:25 p.m. The other was not delivered until midnight. They comped one of the meals and actually brought the full order the second time. So, if we had been really hungry we would have had three meals for the price of one. This room service issue was the only problem we had during the entire stay.
We elected not to rent a car and instead took a cab to/from the airport. Around $28 each way including the tip. We had decided there was enough in the area of the River Walk that we didn't need to have the expense of the rental and parking for three nights.
Just checked my account and the points for the stay, including the 500-point Platinum Thank You amenity, have already posted. Overall, a very good trip at a fine hotel.
