My condolences to the OP for not realizing that they should have received two emails as confirmation of the transaction, and that the small "eTicketed on xxxxx" text was missing when you looked at the reservation on CO.com, and that you should have just called CO reservations and asked "do I actually have a ticket?" sometime after booking it.
The system is horrible, and unfortunately you got bitten by its flaws.
American Airlines is a prime example of a website where you can see the reservation, select seats, request upgrades, etc while the ticket is still ON HOLD. Not purchase, not ticketed but simply during 24-48 courtesy hold that they offer on their website.
