As mentioned above, by transferring your miles to United you can take a one-way award, which gives you the flexibility to only use your CO/UA miles for a return portion and do something else for the outbound flight.

With respect to outbound flight: you can either just pay cash or you can take a standard one-way reward on AA or CO to the hub and pay cash for the rest of the trip. A bad example (as a very long layover) but you can fly DFW-DTW as a standard AA award then take a Delta non-stop DTW-YHZ for $200.
