The Back Bay station is literally right across the street from the entrance to the Copley Mall, which is connected to the hotel. The easiest thing to do is to exit the station and walk directly across the street. Take the escalator up to the mall and walk straight through. It's definitely safe--you are literally outside for less than a minute. The station and the mall are also connected by an underground tunnel--but this would seem less safe at a late hour.
