I live in Southeast Asia for half the year and what I always do when flying from the States is to fly to Bangkok and purchase tickets from there to other destinations. Air Asia usually has the lowest prices but many Bangkok Airways flights are close to Air Asia prices and Bangkok Airways gives all passengers lounge access, free luggage, on board food and reserved seats, none of which you get on Air Asia. Orient Thai offers flights in Thailand cheaper than either airline but you place your life in jeopardy when you use them.
If purchasing my tix from the US - SE Asia I'd do the same. OP is using miles though.
