Flew alaska for the first time/weird routing for award ticket

Flew ALASKA for the first time great flight it was flight 664 SEA-DFW. Had very nice people in my row. One lady in my row used an award ticket and it just seemed very strange with the routing. She was trying to get to Knoxville, TN from portland. It went PDX-SEA-DFW with about a 6 hr layover in DFW then to DTW-BNA then drive from BNA to Knoxville, TN. That just seems like a strange routing to me for an award ticket. Any thoughts?
